Science Lesson #5

For this assignment I had the privilege to interview the chief of my local SAR. Here are some questions and answers from that interview.

(Note: It is not in exact words, I had to write fast)

Q: How long does it take to train a search dog?

A: ” It takes about 8 weeks to 2 years, after they are SAR dogs they train every week to keep up the skills.”

Q: What is the best search dog breed?

A: “We prefer bloodhounds but there are different dogs for different jobs.”

Q: What is the youngest you can be to be a SAR team member?

A: ” The youngest is 19 years old, but most often the youngest here is 20-21 years old”

Q: What kind of search tech to you use

A: Bloodhounds!… they really are great dogs, we give them a shirt, a toy, a backpack; anything that person has touched, and they find the missing subject.

Q: On average how long does a search mission take?

A: It normally takes anywhere from 30 min to 6 hr, but we usually find the missing subject in 30 min to 2 hr.

Q: Finally, What advice to you have to give to people that would help you find them if they are lost?

A: Stay where you are! Many people wander around trying to find camp , but they can be moving farther away from us and getting more lost. So the best thing to do is to just stay put.
